Legend of the Plaguebird

Legend of the Plaguebird was my first full game project, the assignment for it was to create a simple 2D platformer with a unique mechanic.

For my mechanic I got inspired by the idea of one of "A Hat in Time"'s platforming tools, which allows objects in the worldspace to appear and disapear. I slightly changed that idea to only visually make the objects disapear, so you would have to use your lantern to see the objects.

The character for the game was a simple design I had already came up with before, and every asset in the game was made by me! (except for the music, which was created by my good friend blayne) I am proud of the fact I could make all of that art, but due to the fact that it is by no means my speciallty, the game's backgrounds look sub-par, often blending in too well with the foreground elements.

The design process of Legend of the Plaguebird was incredibly simple, as mentioned, all that was required for the assignment was a 2D platformer with any mechanic you wanted. despite how easy the assignment seemed, I struggled quite a bit with the programing. my college offered "TA time" nearly every other day on weekdays, which was a time period where older and more experienced students would give out help to freshman. this was integral to my improvment as a programer, going from not understanding what a function was, to only needing simple nudges in the right direction, but still needing help.

By the end of the project I was a lot more confident in my ability to program, but the deadline felt like it was hovering over my head like the sword of damocles. Due to how much work the end of a semester tends to get you, I ended up not having time to really smooth out aspects of the game I wish I could've.

I will have videos and pictures of the gameplay for Legend of the Plaguebird, and a link to the itch.io page for the game. (if i ever set that up)
